IRS Issues Statement on Health Care Reporting

The IRS posted an important update to the ACA Information Center for Tax Professionals on Tuesday. Taxpayers who do not address the health coverage requirements of the Affordable Care Act will not have their return accepted by the IRS for the upcoming 2018 filing season. This is a big change for this upcoming season. In the past- taxpayers who did not specify their coverage had experienced delays in processing, but they were always accepted by the IRS.

“‎Taxpayers remain obligated to follow the law and pay what they may owe at the point of filing.

The reason why the IRS processed returns that did not address the health care coverage for this tax season was due to an executive order signed by President Trump at the beginning of the year advising agencies, “to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the Act…” The Office of the Press Secretary said.

As tax professionals prepare for the new year it is important for them to stay up to date on all requirements of the Affordable Care Act. EPS will do our part to make sure all of our customers are aware of this when enrolling for the upcoming tax season. Want to learn more about us?
